Shifra

A Story in 3 Chapters Digital Photography 18.5” x 60”

Taking as her point of departure the tradition of urban photography—where the momentous character of living in cities becomes the photographer’s primary focus—Shifra’s modernized take on urban life is distinguished by her use of the digital camera.

The alteration of images which digital photography allows for has enabled Shifra to interpose novel, almost surrealistic distortions onto what would otherwise be conventional photos of urban life and architecture. What comes to light in her works are portraits of impossible structures—the details of which are uncannily presaged by urban landscapes throughout the world.

Surveillance photos, anxiety-inducing distortions of space, prints that appear both vintage and bereft of any history—all of these combine to reveal what lurks just beneath the threshold of our collective awareness, embedded in the visible dimensions of the architecture surrounding us.
