In Olivia Kapoor’s art, many concepts come together in paintings that make a strong connection with the viewer. A practitioner of Inter Dimensional Art, which is based on capturing the artist’s perceptions of the three-dimensional world as it unfolds across time, Kapoor creates works that are at once chaotic and organized, bringing a vibrant, unpredictable energy to each scene. Though her process is partly based on a mathematical approach, with the symmetry of the shapes and colors she employs representing carefully thought out ratios, there is also an engaging spontaneity in her work. Referring to her technique as “very relaxed and meditative,” she lets her emotions play as large a role in the creation of her paintings as do her ideas about art.
Working in acrylics and oil pastels on canvas, the artist mixes textures and patterns in images that can be seen as intricately constructed webs. “I love making paintings that create an atmosphere in which the viewer’s eyes are continually moving around,” she says. Turning skies into kaleidoscopic patterns and landscapes into boldly hued grids, she transforms the environment into a many-layered personal statement. In her hands, the external world assumes the contours of a dream, and the strength of her work encourages us to dream with her.
