The paintings of French artist Caroline Degroiselle offer color-filled imaginative landscapes inspired by the mystic island she grew up on: New Caledonia. Working with bright, vibrant palettes and a variety of textures ranging from simple washes to crusty impastos, Degroiselle creates dynamic compositions that are atmospheric by nature, where the viewer is able to almost step into the work and experience all the sights, sounds, smells, and other physical elements the painting has to offer. The artist’s masterful ability to capture and convey the brilliance of the island light brings an entire new energy to the work, so that one almost feels that the painting has come alive.
As a self-taught artist, Degroiselle makes it a practice to paint from her heart, which she believes gives her work its unique energy. But always, for Degroiselle, it comes back to her beloved island: the place that transformed her into an artist and where she finds her greatest inspiration. As she explains so eloquently: “Most of all, the incredible, unbelievable, and ever changing Caledonian light and this fusion with the sea and the lagoon offer me a unique gift and an eternal inspiration.”
