Sylva Kanderal
bstract figurative painter
Sylva Kanderal
skillfully harmonizes a diverse array of colors, forms, and techniques to create
images as breathtaking as they are laden with meaning. Each picture tells a story, using a delicate balance of flowing lines
and undulating forms to capture emotive expression in the midst of both figurative and abstract compositional elements.
Working in both oil and acrylic, Kanderal paints using brushstrokes that are smooth and graceful, as one element unfurls into
the next. What results are images that effectively capture the viewer’s imagination while showcasing all the loveliness there is
to be found in the shapes and forms that have come to be part of our everyday world.
Kanderal’s paintings are elegantly rendered and ethereal in scope, delving well beneath the surface to uncover all the hidden
meanings that lie beneath the most familiar of images or subjects. Often based on the female figure (used as a loose template),
her images are free and expansive, rendered with a great deal of spontaneity and movement. Within each composition, the
viewer is given a glimpse into another world of subconscious meaning, alternately reflecting the thoughts, feelings, and even
dreams of both the artist and the viewer.
For Kanderal, it is the abstract elements in her paintings that give her the greatest freedom. Here, surreal and abstract
figurative components are executed in delicate colors that take her otherworldly subjects to a whole new level. Emotive
elements are strong in these spaces, as the artist “follows my feelings and fantasy, and lets my soul be free.”
Also a dentist, Sylva Kanderal currently lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. She has exhibited widely in Europe.
