A Sense of Surprise At Every Corner
Steven Hill
I began to work
en plein air
back in the late 1970’s, around the Pacific Northwest, especially in the San Juan Islands where
I now live. Having been an abstract painter fresh-out of graduate school at Washington State University (1974) I knew that
I had connected with something bigger, something that resonated even more with all I had learned about handling non-
objective shapes, forms, and colors.
To me, there is no greater joy to be found than responding first-hand with a stroke of color, to the subject matter in front of
me. It becomes visceral at times, meditative at others, and always comes with a great deal of anticipation, knowing I am about
to experience a one shot, very spontaneous painting environment. Working
alla prima
gives everything life and energy, with
a sense of surprise at every corner.
