The Reanimation of a Body in Ruin, Mixed Media & Acrylic on Canvas 20''x60''
Gently tiptoeing the tenuous line between life and death, representation and total abstraction, existence and non-existence, Chris Spuglio’s evocative compositions poetically articulate the frailty of all living things great and small. Using rich earth tones, rough hewn textures, and impasto brushstrokes, Spuglio creates a subtle but pervasive impression of decay. Other, more brightly colored canvases incorporate a heightened, chaotic sense of movement and frenetic line to create a hypnopompic or hallucinatory image with a palpable Surrealist influence. Here again, Spuglio explores and ultimately illustrates a nebulous realm in the human experience: the time between consciousness and unconsciousness. It is in this place, somewhere between dreams and reality, Spuglio’s expressive spirit conjures visions of stunning color and depth. Vivid reds and oranges glow against ominous black backgrounds, while thick layers of alabaster white build up in a sculptural crescendo from the canvas.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Chris Spuglio has trained at the renowned Massachusetts College of Art and Design and holds a B.A. in Fine Art from Salem State College. His acclaimed work has been featured in over solo and group 30 exhibitions and received “Best in Show” out of 200 participating artists in the Melrose Arts Fine Wine and Fine Art Exhibition. www.spugliostudios.com www.Art-Mine.com/ArtistPage/Chris_Spuglio.aspx
