Abstract Bridge Watercolor on Paper 25''x 30'' Abstract Bridge Watercolor on Paper 25''x 30''

Escape to a place of serenity. Enter into the world of Marc van der Leeden’s paintings. With a flourish of his brush, the artist transports you to the calming scenes of coastal towns and valleys. He moves you from one locale to the next, with fluid lines and a soothing palette.

His bungalows and lonely houses are the enviable summer homes of those seeking refuge from their normally fast-paced lives. Still, even when van der Leeden paints a bridge, he does so with a flair for romanticizing the simple. The bridge’s artful curves move the viewer from one side of the paper to the other, from the present situation to a moment of thoughtful bliss. Similarly, his recurring lighthouses suggest an intent to guide the viewer toward inner peace. One gets lost in the beauty of the self-taught artist’s paintings as one would if staring off into the ocean.

Red Hibiscus Silkpainting 24''x 24'' Red Hibiscus Silkpainting 24''x 24''

Drawing inspiration from the lush atmosphere and rich indigenous history of her home in Belize, artist Lee Vanderwalker produces captivating silk paintings in rich colors that reverberate with the spirit of the Caribbean.  Embracing the controlled chaos of silk painting techniques, Vanderwalker adapts her artistic vision and goals throughout each artistic journey.  From this intuitive process of mark making, the artist renders simplified forms, often appropriated from the ancient Mayan visual lexicon which work together to create a heightened sense of primal human energy.  The vibrant colors of nature juxtaposed on the fragile surface of her silk paintings produces a breezy effect which is not only reminiscent of the Caribbean climate, but of the complex and beautiful history and culture that the artist has come to incorporate as her own.

Belizean-American artist Lee Vanderwalker grew up in Michigan but developed a strong artistic and emotional kinship with the culture of the Caribbean. She currently resides in Belize.

Fly with Birds Oil on Canvas 44''x 70'' Fly with Birds Oil on Canvas 44''x 70''
Tamar Greenfeld’s oil paintings exude an elated sense of mysticism. The figures in Greenfeld’s work merge with one another—flowers become women, women become mountains, and mountains become rivers. This mystical interchangeability creates a delicate mood that mirrors the transient state of the human subconscious. Like dreams, Greenfeld’s work is alluringly equivocal. Greenfeld’s paintings appeal to viewer’s recollections and nostalgia, inviting them to participate in the ethereal scenes that play out on canvas by letting their memories and emotions range freely.

Greenfeld’s palette is diverse; she uses pastels as liberally as she uses primary colors. She also uses both airy washes of color and heavier brushwork. Yet, no matter how bold Greenfeld’s colors or how heavy her brushstrokes, her work always seems to be effortlessly floating in a non-existent atmosphere somewhere between heaven and earth.

Live painting at Cafe Pause, Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Mar 16th 2008 Live painting at Cafe Pause, Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Mar 16th 2008

Abstract painter Hiroaki Koshiba studies the relationship between music and images to create a body of abstract paintings rich with color, movement, and energy.  Drawing much of his inspiration from sound, Koshiba paints to musical recordings letting them guide his brush to create unique and spirited compositions.  More recently, Koshiba has taken his musical art to new levels, incorporating performance into his works.  Painting in public spaces throughout Tokyo, Beijing, Missouri, and New York, Koshiba collaborates with live musicians to create a multi sensory experience for the audience.  After the performance, the result is a fully realized work of abstract painting.  Reminiscent of an impromptu Jazz performance, these "Sound Images", as the artist calls them, are created without any previous planning yet result in harmoniously balanced completed works.  Working in his own visual lexicon of lines and dots, Koshiba concentrates on the sounds elicited by the musicians’ instruments to guide his mark making process. The music's mood, dynamic, tempo, and key help the artist select colors to interpret the music through visual means.

Possession Acrylic on Canvas 16''x 12'' Possession Acrylic on Canvas 16''x 12''

Christel Sobke creates hyper-real digitized images where color acts as light and light acts as subject, thus reversing traditional pictorial paradigms. The works engage the viewer with the cognitive process of comprehending their visual stimuli, leaving a lasting impression in the blink of an eye.

Born in Germany, and a child of post war German industrialization, Sobke was influenced by a lack of nature from childhood. She took to painting and drawing early on and from the beginning her work centered on natural subjects as it was a platform to convey environmental concerns. Her initial work showed the effects of pollution on her town of origin, and later she moved to individual subjects to explore the effects of nature's degradation. Sobke's digital explorations of subject-matter currently focus on orchids. She uses macro-photography to probe the center of the flora and offer extraordinary color choices to exaggerate the flowers' tropical, hyper-real compositions. In so doing, she highlights their natural beauty and superimposes the effects of mutation into a single frame.
