Oh ! yeah ! Acrylic on Canvas 46.5''x 36.5'' Oh ! yeah ! Acrylic on Canvas 46.5''x 36.5''
With sense of humor and frivolity, Japanese painter Kenji Inoue creates dynamic acrylics on canvas by incorporating the powerful imagery, energy, and spirit of manga and anime. Playfully rendered in a childlike style, Inoue's paintings are wildly gestural, confrontational, and magnetic. Giving us Pop art with a distinctly Japanese flair, Inoue's work is intriguing for his unusual use of visual contradictions.  While his paintings posses a certain level of kitsch and low brow subject matter, Inoue raises his works to the level of high art through his choice of materials and sophisticated spatial arrangements.  Utilizing bold gestural strokes, swirling lines, and vivid, artificial colors, Inoue calls forth a sonic energy and elicits a sense of excitement from the viewer. In an engaging, television style manner, Inoue transfixes the viewer with an exploding moment of action, perplexing him with an unresolved cliffhanger.

Educated in Fine Art and Illustration, Kenji Inoue currently develops his take on Pop Art in his native Japan.

Christian Nicklaus Print
Artist Profiles - Volume 19

Christian in his Studio Christian in his Studio

Award winning artist, Christian Nicklaus creates paintings that provide an overwhelming sensory experience for audiences. Runes and Celtic imagery interweave and overlap with expressive characters and collage elements in a bold, imaginative style. A veritable maze of imagery greets viewers, requiring serious visual exploration, while cryptic titles accent the mood and provide the starting point for understanding the message. “My work is a grouping of in-depth hieroglyphics, which display my own wishes, fears, heritage, and hope without always giving the viewer a complete Rosetta Stone of translation,” Nicklaus explains.

The richness of his work is a result of weaving together a complex array of undulating Celtic motifs, emblematic forms, and textural areas, including representations of natural qualities of wood or stone. The sophisticated visual metaphors in his paintings cross barriers of time and place to present a glimpse into his own internal dialogue. Correspondingly, his work is often allowed to be rough hewn, like a thought being fleshed out before being fully developed. His adept drafting skills come to the forefront on other occasions, where polished line work and gradations in tone add a sense of depth and dimensionality.

Nasturtium Oil on Canvas 20''x 16'' Nasturtium Oil on Canvas 20''x 16''

Heather Lara’s paintings imbue the nuances of nature—like a blade of grass or the slight discoloration in a flower petal—with lively energy. While her work reflects a painstaking attention to details, Lara does not let detail infringe upon her expressiveness. Instead, her vigilance makes her work all the more spirited.

Lara seeks out beauty in everything she sees. Nature has provided her with an endless supply of subject matter and she aims to represent the world with compelling enthusiasm. While committed to the observable splendor of nature, Lara takes artistic liberties with her subjects, enhancing shapes and intensifying colors. Such liberties allow her to better convey the spirit, not just the actuality, of beauty. Because Lara honestly responds to what she sees, she has an eclectic style. Different subject matter leads her to different materials and techniques. Currently, Lara is focusing on lush oil paintings, using vibrant colors to capture nature’s voluminous qualities.

123 Digital Print on Canvas 24''x 24'' 123 Digital Print on Canvas 24''x 24''

The vibrant colors and forms of Julia Cher’s photographs capture the wild beauty and the pulsating energy of the natural world.  Cher focuses on the details of rocks, minerals and shells—the smallest and most unique patterns, shapes, and hues of nature’s perfect design.  Because of these focused, almost surrealistic views, her photographs can look like abstract works of modern art, like splattered paint and manipulated textures.  Her goal is to capture this rarely seen natural beauty and share it with her viewers.  Her work is epitomized in the statement, “Beauty can change the world.”  She hopes the beauty of her photographs will move people to love, rather than hate, and to preserve, rather than destroy.

Cher grew up in Russia, but it was moving to America that most influenced her career.  Her quest to capture beauty began with fashion photography, and she finally found her niche and her true passion in graphic digital photography.

Crimson Digital Print on Canvas 36''x 36'' Crimson Digital Print on Canvas 36''x 36''

JOUANNE’s vibrant and futuristic visions of swirling colors call to the senses and stimulate the eye with their intense undulating movement and sensual smoothness of texture.  With a rich and almost spiritual dynamism, JOUANNE’s works reverberate with a sense of  buoyant, creative passion and vivid intensity.  Using digital imaging techniques, JOUANNE creates a psychedelic spiral of dazzling computerized hues.  These distorted abstractions printed onto canvas produce an op-art effect giving the dual impressions of extreme flatness and elastic depth.  Inspired by the spectrum of pigments melded into the Dutch oil crayon, JOUANNE began her experiments in color with a series of aquatic influenced works on paper.  Her works continue to have a liquid energy, where colors endlessly flow, bubble, and ripple across the surface.

Featured in ARTNews and other respected visual art publications, JOUANNE has exhibited her works in galleries throughout the United States and lives and works in Sacramento, California.
